Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

These questions and answers provide a snapshot of how things are run at the Wesley Academy of Music. For further details or for questions not yet answered, please refer to our handbook.

When are lessons scheduled?

Students’ lessons are scheduled before the beginning of the semester.

How long does a lesson last?

Lessons are 30 minutes long.

What lesson slots are available?

Lessons slots are open based on the instructor’s availability.

What do students need for a lesson?

Students must come to lessons prepared. This includes bringing music, a pencil, and instrument to every lesson (students who do not have access to an instrument may borrow their instrument of study from WAM, if available).

What are the practice requirements like?

Students must practice what the instructor has assigned them to practice. Much like homework from school, assignments from WAM instructors are to be practiced at home, outside of lesson times. We expect students to conduct individual practice on their private lesson assignments an average of 20 minutes per day. Time spent in school ensemble rehearsal, or on school music (unless it is specifically being addressed in a lesson), does not count toward this daily 20-minute expectation.

Are there any requirements outside of lessons?

We require all students to participate in their school band or choir program, if applicable.

Can lessons be rescheduled?

Because lesson slots are open based on the instructor’s availability, lessons may only be rescheduled at the instructor’s discretion.

What is the attendance policy?

If a child receives four (4) absences during one semester, he/she is no longer qualified for the program and will be dismissed from WAM. Additional details regarding absences can be found in the WAM handbook.

Does WAM ever cancel lessons for inclement weather?

WAM follows the decision making of Franklin County Schools for inclement weather. If Franklin County Schools are closed on a given day, we will not be having lessons that evening. In addition to this policy, the WAM staff has full discretion to cancel lessons due to weather or for any other reason.

Does WAM offer group lessons?

At this time, WAM is only offering private lessons. However, we are considering doing group classes in the future. Stay tuned!
